Big Toe Arthritis (1st MTPJ arthritis)

This is an extremely common condition. After all, when we walk or run, the big toe has such a large amount of force acting upon it for such a relatively small joint. There are many options available to treat these symptoms depending on in individual requirements for each patient.

Big toe arthritis, otherwise known as Hallux Rigidus, is diagnosed usually by physical exam. A physical exam will look at the range of movements and pain points. Medical imaging such as x-rays may be conducted to assess the extent of the damage. It may also be used to identify any bone spurs.
