The hindfoot is made up of many joints at the back of the foot, near the ankle. These joints, like the ankle, can suffer from wear and tear or inflammation. Pain from these joints is commonly mistaken to be ankle joint pain which will therefore not respond to treatments targeting the ankle alone. Furthermore, it is common for more than one of these joints to be involved at the same time which can lead to pain and deformities that may require surgical correction.
Common signs of hindfoot arthritis include pain in the middle or back of foot when walking, noticing a change in the shape of your foot including losing the arch and the heel bone pointing outwards and losing foot flexibility.
Diagnosing hindfoot arthritis is usually done by identifying the symptoms and inspecting the foot. Additional medical imaging may be required. As with many arthritis conditions, unless diagnosed and receiving treatment for hindfoot then your symptoms can get progressively worse.
Treatment, to begin with, may include medication to relieve pain and inflammation, activity and footwear modification, steroid injections, and physiotherapy. If none of these conservative treatments appear to help then surgery may be required.
Hindfoot fusion is a possible surgical treatment used to treat this form of arthritis. It helps to fuse the joints together rather than allowing the surfaces to rub together which causes stiffness and pain.
